Play Review
Family Matters
This play is an excellent example of the hardships of being a teenager. This is something that is tough to deal with and especially when you have parents that they might think are way too overbearing. This play was played to excellence with passionate acting from the actors almost to think that every actor in the play went exactly through this situation through their adolescence. The play is filled with meanings behind the mask and things that you may not see unless you truly study the dialogue and the text and see what is really meant.
There was something that was important in the play when the main character talks about how her parents are riding her to hard and if it doesn’t stop that she could burst. This is a metaphor that explains the true problem that is going on in the entire play. She is having problems with being always nagged. The tenor is her parents and the vehicle is being ridden. This shows that it is so hard for Hannah to do everything because she is continually being hassled by her parents to always be doing something right. But I think that there could be some meanings masked in this situation. I think that Hannah needs to be able to deal with her parents and be a little more proactive instead of just taking everything they are saying and not doing anything about it. This is more of a lesson to her as well that she needs to do what she wants to do instead of just following every single thing her parents want her to do.
It affects the play because some people might think that this play is strictly about her parents being way too overbearing and controlling but it could also be viewed as Hannah’s lack of initiative in this case. I think she needs to do a lot more for herself instead of being so passive and letting her parents live her life. This could affect how someone looks at the play and to someone who may be the pro in this story and who maybe the con in this story. With this in mind there are multiple ways to view this play and you could side with a different party depending how you look at it.
Overall this play is a very passionate and heartfelt play that the audience will have to choose for themselves. Do they want to take the side of Hannah the teenager who is struggling or the parents who are too overbearing and want to control everything? You decide.
